The finest purveyors of midnight margaritas are returning in Practical Magic 2. Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest are joining the cast of the witchy sequel, a follow-up to the 1998 film Practical Magic.

Entertainment Weekly can confirm that the award-winning actresses will reprise their roles as Aunt Jet (Wiest) and Aunt Franny (Channing), the two women responsible for raising Owens sisters Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian (Nicole Kidman) and teaching them magic. The film was based on the 1995 Alice Hoffman novel of the same name.

Though little is known about the details of the sequel's plot, producer Denise Di Novi, who also produced the original film, told EW last year that it would take its inspiration from Hoffman's 2021 Practical Magic sequel, The Book of Magic.

"We’re going to be very faithful," Di Novi said. "We’re cognizant to how important those characters and that movie are to so many people. We’re not going to reinvent the wheel. We’re going to draw from Alice Hoffman’s books, as the first movie did, and we’re going to be true to the chronology of how many years later it is."

Hoffman has written four Practical Magic novels in total, though two of them were conceived as prequels to the 1995 original.

Joining the returning cast of Bullock, Kidman, Wiest, and Channing are new members of the cast: Joey King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod. King is reportedly going to be playing the role of Bullock's character's daughter, but little else is known about the plot or character details for the newcomers.

"Twenty-five years ago, Sally, Gillian, Aunt Jet and Aunt Franny flew off the pages of Alice Hoffman’s beloved novel and into theaters around the world," read a statement from the production team, "and we are thrilled to bring the Owens family back to the big screen with Joey, Lee, Maisie, Solly and Xolo joining the next chapter in our story. The enduring affection for these characters has been our inspiration to deliver the next installment in the Owens’ story to new fans, and those who’ve been with us since the beginning."

Earlier this year, Kidman and Bullock announced that they were officially returning for the film. According to Warner Bros., production on the sequel is now officially underway. The project was first announced last summer.

Susanne Bier (The Perfect Couple, Bird Box) is attached to direct, taking over the helm from Griffin Dunne, who oversaw the first film. Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the original, is back, co-writing the scrip alongside Georgia Pritchett (Succession). Not only are Bullock and Kidman reprising their roles, but they're also taking on producorial duties alongside Di Novi.

The film is currently slated for release on Sept. 18, 2026, just in time for spooky season.
